studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" at 7:00 a.m. on the west coast on this friday. i'm matt lauer. >> good morning. i'm savannah guthrie. we're following breaking news at this hour on that seattle-bound flight from los angeles. >> 116 passengers on board when that pilot passed out somewhere over oregon. leaving his co-pilot to declare a mid flight emergency and then safely, luckily, land that plane. >> let's get to tom costello who covers aviation for nbc. good morning to you. >> good morning to you. this is why commercial airplanes always have two pilots in the cockpit. this was alaska airlines flight 473 flying from l.a. to seattle. it left l.a. at about 6:40 p.m. and in mid-flight when the pilot suddenly had a problem and became unconscious. the plane was on auto pilot at the time and the first officer took over the controls. he declared an emergency, put the plane down in portland, oregon. a doctor was on board as well as other medical professionals we're told and had helped treat

the pilot and paramedics met the plane on the ramp and assisted before transporting him to a hospital. we don't have word on his condition but we are told he is a 28-year veteran pilot. the first officer an 11-year veteran. some of the passengers were rebooked on a shuttle flight to seattle while others had to wait until a replacement pilot arrived at about midnight or so. another incident forced an emergency landing in denver. we have some cell phone video of this incident. a flight scheduled to come into san diego from new york city was diverted due to an unruly passenger on board we're told. jet blue flight 185 landed in denver at 7:15. kusa reports it was a customer service issue between a flight attendant and female passenger. a federal air marshall got involved. once the individual was escorted off the plane the flight was back in the air. denver police, the tsa and fbi are now handling that investigation. back to youp. >> all right.

tom costello, thank you so much. >> we're following another breaking news story. ed koch, former mayor of new york city has died. he was a towering political figure in the city who earned a reputation for his sometimes combative style. ron allen has more on koch's career in politics. good morning to you. >> good morning to you. ed koch was certainly a legendary iconic figure in new york. tributes and remembrances are pouring in. he was 88 and died of congestive heart failure. he's being remembered as a politician that got things done, did so in a way that left a lasting impression. >> hi! >> reporter: ed koch was a quintessential new yorker and one of the city's most popular and outspoken politicians. known for his no none sense, in-your-face colorful personality. and his trademark question, asked of friends and foes alike, even on "saturday night live." >> how am i doing?

>> edward irving koch was born to polish jewish immigrants in the bronx, new york, in 1924. he was drafted to serve in world war ii. he began climbing the political ladder, a democrat who served on new york's city council and three terms in the congress and in 1977, he became new york's 105th mayor a job koch often said he wanted for life. kofrp took over a city facing financial crisis and credited with saving it from disaster. he was mayor for 12 years that were spirited, ir rev vant and rarely, if ever, boring. >> thank you. >> reporter: in 1982, he lost a democratic primary for governor to rival mario cuomo. >> i promised i would never run for governor again. >> you promised that before. >> right. >> reporter: in 199, he lost his bid for an unprecedented fourth term as mayor to david din kins who became new york's first

african-american mayor. >> want you not to feel sorry for me. believe me, there is a life after the mayor. >> reporter: koch never married or had children. after leaving office koch endured a stroke, heart attack and quadruple bypass surgery and wrote more than a dozen books, became an enthusiastic twitter user and came into the homes of many americans as the judge on "the people's court." >> judgment for the plaintiff. >> reporter: one former new york mayor said, wouldn't wish the position on his worst enemy but koch said, it's the greatest job anyone could ever have. there just happens to be a documentary film opening tonight ain't koch's life full of memorable one liners and can dis interviews. the current mayor mike bloomberg has ordered flags flown in half staff in his honer. his funeral will be held on monday. >> ron allen, thank you very much. someone who was born and raised

in this city, mr. mayor, thank you for all you did. >> one of america's originals for sure. a busy morning, another big story, a terror attack at a u.s. embassy in turkey. tamron hall in for natalie at the news desk. >> good morning, everyone. an explosion outside the u.s. embassy in ankara, turkey. local police say a suicide bomber detonated in the -- suicide bomb detonated in the capital city killing at least three people. ambulances at the scene are responding to several people who were wounded. the latest jobs numbers are out this morning. courtney reagan is at the cnbc world headquarters with more. good morning. >> good morning to you, tamron. the first jobs report of 2013 showed 157,000 jobs were added in january. that was the low growth expectation. the unemployment rate dixes up a hair to 7.9%. but thanks to revisions the economy added one third of a million more jobs in 2012 than previously estimated.

a large part of those jobs coming in the final months of the year. this as the dow closed out its strongest january in 19 years as we eye 14,000 yet again. >> thank you. and dozens of people are dead in mexico city after a massive explosion rocked a state-owned oil complex. rescuers are searching through the rubble as investigators search for the cause of that blast that killed at least 32 people and injured more than 100 others. the los angeles archdiocese is apologizing announcing that move -- a move of thousands of pages of personnel files have been released, detailing years of alleged abuse by l.a. priests. former cardinal roger mahony has been stripped of his public duties for his role in covering up alleged child sex abuse by priests. another school shooting is under investigation. this one in atlanta. a 14-year-old boy is recovering today after he was shot in the back of the neck. police say they have the suspected shooter, another

student, in custody. a massive pileup on an indiana interstate involving 40 vehicles. the road was closed in both directions for hours as crews cleared that accident. several people were injured. a final farewell to one of our favorite shows here at nbc. the "30 rock" series finale aired last year ending the seven-year run. it was filled with laughs, tears and familiar faces. >> and i quote, get in your purple bentley and be home with your sharks before the tri-state area gets slammed by what is being called snowicane, or something. >> and our own sa van na got in on the action, replacing matt with a homeless guy who was very well dressed. it is now 7:09 on the west coast. back to savannah and the real matt. >> he was a delight. >> was he? >> he was. >> did you enjoy your star turn,

a man they say opened fire on a school bus. >> the past days have not been easy on anybody. >> reporter: a police source says the suspect is 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes, described as a loner who distrusts the government. the boy is only being identified as ethan. police say the two are holed up eight feet underground in a 4 by 6 foot bunker. it's said to be full of supplies including a television. >> i think that he may have something to say and he wants people to hear him. not sure what that is, but i don't think he intends to hurt that little boy. >> reporter: hostage negotiators have been talking to dykes through a pvc pipe and dykes has allowed police to send medicine and coloring books for ethan down that pipe. >> time decreases stress and anxiety in a hostage situation and as long as you can measure that, there's no need to move this forward perhaps get someone hurt. >> it all started on tuesday when a police source says dykes

boarded a school bus demanding two random children. witnesses say the drive charles poland jr. refused and that's when dykes allegedly shot and killed poland and made off with eth ethan. >> my dad loved children. >> reporter: aaron poland and his sister lydia are the son and daughter of the bus driver. they want the world to know their father died a hero. >> every time a child got on my dad's bus they were no longer their parents, they were his. he considered them his children. i know that's the reason why my dad took those shots for his children, just like he would do for me and my sister. >> reporter: they say their father wasn't the type to back down. >> my daddy, was not just a hero on tuesday. my daddy was a hero in my whole life. he was my me ro. -- hero. >> reporter: the standoff has dragged on now for more than 65 hours. several schools in the area

remain closed as this town prays for a peaceful resolution. savannah? >> absolutely. gabe gutierrez in midland city, thank you. here's matt. >> former republican senator chuck hagel's nomination as secretary of defense will be put to a vote some time next week. this after hagel was met with sharp questions from both sides of the aisle during his confirmation hearing on thursday. nbc's kelly o'donnell is live on capitol hill. kelly, good morning. >> good morning, matt. the white house is not sounding alarm bells but officials do say this was not a perfect performance from chuck hagel who served in the senate for 12 years, a republican from nebraska, and you would think that would make him very familiar with confirmation hearings, but it didn't turn out that way. respected for his decorated combat service in vietnam, but repeatedly pressed about his views on today's hot spots, even democrats took issue when chuck hagel referred to iran as a legitimate government. >> i do not see iran or the iran nan government as a legitimate government and i would like your

thoughts on that. >> what i meant to say, should have said, it's recognizable. it's been recognized, is recognized at the un. >> reporter: both parties wanted reassurance on israel. >> i'm a strong supporter of israel. i have been, i will continue to be. >> reporter: while hagel had done prep sessions in advance, he appeared unprepared when challenged on past statements like saying, the jewish lobby intimidates on capitol hill. >> name one person in your opinion who's intimidated by the israeli lobby in the united states senate. >> well, first -- >> name one. >> i don't know. >> reporter: another old friend wanted hagel to concede that he had been wrong to oppose the iraq troop surge. >> the surge being the most -- >> the question is, were you right or wrong? that's a pretty straightforward question. >> well, i'm not going to give you a yes or no answer. >> reporter: some republicans questioned hagel's judgment on national security. >> why do you think that the

drumming up controversy and this super bowl commercial starts to get some buzz. go daddy's commercial is called the perfect match. wink, wink. nudge, nudge. race car driver and spokeswoman danica patrick tees it up. >> there are two sides to go daddy, the sexy side, and the smart side that creates a killer website for your business, represented by walter. >> kind of funny and then, depending on your threshold, shocking. the extra who is everywhere, but who no one really knows. here is where it gets interesting. the full-length commercial goes in for a tight, leave no tongue to the imagination close-up. go daddy says this slightly tamer version will air on cbs during the super bowl. the internet company has made a marketing campaign out of commercial controversy. >> has go daddy gone too far

this time? >> well -- >> some say the commercial is too hot for tv. >> how hot is too hot? >> in 2008 the company says their first super bowl commercial was rejected, but the one that did air made sure viewers could find the racy original. >> you won't see it on tv, but it's on at go daddy.com. >> 1.5 million people visited their website by the end of the game. the shock and awe strategy seem s to work. so this year they are back at it. >> look at that, dude. >> something that should be on tv or not on tv? >> definitely not. >> one word to describe that commercial. go. >> incest. >> gross. >> gosh, oh, gosh. >> how much is she paid for that? >> what anyone wants to see makes little difference. what matters is whether or not they remember it. just an interesting fact about the commercial. they shot that commercial in the same commercial where they shot the movie "psycho."

but people know what to do, that's their job and i trust them to make their decisions. but i just feel like if you do something like that and it's filled with a lot of humor and, you know, we kind of joke about ourselves here, then go all the way. but i trust the people that know better than me, that know television. >> let's bring in our expert. good segue. do you think that this pushes the envelope of good taste or is this a really good commercial? >> i think it's a great commercial for go daddy. go daddy has looked at the sensationalism for a long time and want to capture your attention. we talked about the other day with the new add, the deutsch has brought it to a new level. go daddy is a technology company, personified in jesse. but they're still staying true to that sexy -- >> did cbs make the right call? >> i think they probably did for the viewing public in general. they have this history of bringing people to the website. >> i spoke with the director,

she may or may not exist. let me start at 12:30 this morning when the girl's parent got into an argument. the woman grabbed the child and drove out of the house. this is what the woman is saying. the husband came after them. rammed the car and grabbed the girl out of the car. that's what the wife is saying. the man then took off according to the woman and that is when the amber alert came out. however, just talked to oakland police and they say that the man called police after he heard he was can't wanteded for this amb alert and says there's no daughter. we don't have one. wife says there is one. husband says there's not. oakland police talk to 56-year-old kim tolefree. the former suspect in this case who says he does not have a daughter. his wife says they do have a daughter. oakland police leaving that amber alert in place for the missing 1-year-old or 13 to 18-month-old isaza tolefree.

8:21. wall street journal now says it has been hit by chinese computer hackers a day after "the new york times" revealed its computers were also infiltrated. cyber attacks probably serve as a good reminder that all of us need to be concerned about online security. what you can do to protect yourself. omar, good morning. nice to see you. you're going to talk about some common holes in security that people need to plug and they need to plug quickly. and the first one is passwords. you don't even like the term passwords. >> the number one security hole for most people is personal, their personal accounts get exposed when they have insecure passwords. people should be thinking about having something like a passphrase, which is two or three words that aren't going to show up in a dictionary, that are longer. it's harder to guess. that makes it much harder for somebody to crack that account. >> and it is true, you need to have a different password or

right now a developing story to tell you about out of oakland. good morning, everybody. it's 9:56. i'm jon kelley. a bizarre twist in an overnight amber alert case. that suspect says he never kidnapped a toddler. in fact, he says that toddler never existed. oakland police say he is telling the truth. an amber alert did go into effect overnight after a mother report heard daughter had been kidnapped by the girl's father, 56-year-old kim tollfree. tollfree then apparently turned himself in after hearing he was wanted. oakland police did confirm there is no toddler and the accusations came after a domestic dispute. we will, of course, have many more details coming up on this story on nbc bay area news at 11:00. right now a check on that forecast with meteorologist rob

>> wow. that must have been -- was there heart disease in your family? >> yes. yes. >> lots of it, right? >> were you aware of it? >> to be honest with you, i wasn't. >> was it mostly men in your family? >> it's my father and his siblings. both women and men. sfoo what happened with you? >> like you said, at the age of 37, i -- weeks before the heart attack i had pain in the left side of my neck. iing anothered it. of course, three weeks later had a heart attack and was rushed to the e.r. my daughter -- i call her my angel. she saved me life. she had to call 911. >> how old was she? >> 14 at the time. >> what's interesting is you don't picture women this young having to deal with heart issues, but that is often the case. >> but, you know, if her case having such a strong family history and not knowing it, the family history is the one thing that is not modifiable, and having such a strong family history, placed her at risk for heart attacks at an early age. so at 37, we talk about her risk

factors, she was under chronic stress, slept probably, what, four to five hours. chronic sleep deficit. you add that, you know, those two with a family history and clearly she was ripe for a heart attack. >> what about you, eva? are you the one that had the aneurism? >> yes. >> tell us about that. >> so young too. >> that's the thing. i had type ii. i had a murmur, and i knew that does was not quite right in my heart, but they said you're okay now. come back in five years. i chose to ignore the fact that i needed to go back. i waited 13 years to go back to follow-up, and the murmur was just a little noise in my heart, but over those 13 years the aneurism on top of my heart continued to grow, and i wasn't aware of it. so when i finally did go back, they did discover that the aneurism was very large. >> you are very athletic, right? >> i like to exercise a lot, yes. >> a lot of this stuff is preventible. that's the funny thing. you can fix it from the outside, but oftentimes we don't think of it.

what can people at home do if they're concerned about this? >> i think people need to know that heart disease is the leading killer of women in united states. it can be prevented. knowing your risks, knowing that high blood pressure definitely diabetes, elevated blood sugar, elevated cholesterol, having a family history, as p you had with heart disease, being sedentary, and for us women knowing that stress plays a critical role in the build-up of plaque and lack of sleep. >> what if you can't do anything about that stuff? >> stress is a necessary evil, but learning to control it. if you take ten minutes a day to laugh, to listen to your favorite music and just destress, it definitely puts the stress level back down. >> is that what you are doing? >> yes, ma'am. >> well, we're so glad -- >> have you to exercise even less as a result? >> fortunately, i had my open heart surgery two years ago, and now i can exercise as much as i
